Movie star Anton Yelchin, most notable for his portrayal of Chekov in the latest series of Start Trek films, recently passed away after being pinned by his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The model vehicle is part of a recall due to a gearshift issue that leaves a car in neutral when the driver thinks it is safely in park.
When it comes to the recall itself, there is some question as to whether it should have gone out earlier to prevent serious and life-threatening injuries like Anton’s. Once a problem is discovered, it becomes the company’s duty to proactively take correct steps, which would include releasing a recall as soon as possible. For example, Toyota recently recalled 3.37 million cars worldwide—495,000 of them in the United States alone—over a fault in the emission control units of the airbags. As of the end of June, no injuries had yet been reported due to the problem, but they released the recall anyway to avoid any future injuries.
Car recalls should be taken extremely seriously, but not everyone is made aware of the recalls when they happen. To make sure that you and your family members are driving safe cars, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website to learn more about vehicle recalls.
